section 11 audeince feedback

when showing our film in suspense in class, we all gave each other postive and negative feedback to each film made, to help us in the future when filming and editing again.
Our postive comments were that the credits which were a a white background with black type writter font, to match the font we made a letter appear once at a time, this added susspense. Another postive note was also to do with the editing which was, the green screen we simply filmed a news report in front of a blue background then editied a picture into the background, we chose a city scape as this is what you would expect to see on the news. To add to this we also made a quick introduction to the news which was the face of big ben and some music which is alwats associated with the news at seven this was also popular with the group.
The negative comments that were made were, that our film was slighty to short, it is confusing at the end because it does just stop. To help this we could put some credits like the opening ones in after the last shot. Another constructive critism was that the news presenter looked to young however, this was the only bad thing about the report.
We aggreed with all the comments, and they helped my group to see what we needed to do, or what we can do in the future.

secton 12 evaluation

In groups we were giving the task of creating the first few minutes of a thriller, obviously it had to follow thriller criteria. For a film to be a good thriller, it should use different codes and conventions. With previously studying these codes and conventions, it became easily apparent what we needed to use.
We followed the rules of G.K Chesterton, Chesterton Defined it was a 'modern genre' this idea probably started from the constant use of urban landscapes in thriller films. Therefore my group tried to use as much urban landscape as we could as most of are thriller was filmed inside this was slightly difficult, however with the housing being situated on a busy main road it still had a urban feel to it. Chesterton then attempted to find 'poetry of modern life' this meant he was looking for excitement in everyday modern life trying to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. The plot does have some reality to it, however it’s a lot more over exaggerated then it would ever be in every day life, and such as two people faking there deaths because they want to run away in love with simply just be two normal people moving in real life. Following on from help from Chesterton, we also found use from using every day people, who in the end becomes a hero, our main character is someone people can immediately relate with as in his early monologue he mentions how he watches to much TV, a everyday problem which a lot of people have and also how he is in love, however its not easy for him. People can relate and feel empathy towards our ‘hero’.
The most important convention of a thriller in my opinion is that there has to be twists and turns, therefore we place a news report at the beginning of our film which makes the audience believe there has been a fatal car crash, yet at the end of the film it becomes clear this was all fake, the people in the ‘car crashed’ planned it and ran away together the whole film practically is built around why they died and how, then the audience learns they in fact survived, this was a code from Wh Matthew, he used fiction to create his theory that its like a labyrinth, thrillers have twists and turns which makes the film a puzzling journey for the audience, the movie becomes more addicting to watch and draws the audience in to want to find out what is going on. The audience has to go through mazes, twists, turns and dead ends until they come to the end of the film. This leads to partial vision, with only having a small clip of a new report, you do not get the whole story which adds to the confusing creating more dramatic tension. Lars Die Saurberg talks about the two ways in which suspense can be added. The first idea is to deliberately hide things from the audience and the second is to delay a protracting outcome. Another important thing in a thriller is to keep the audience guessing, ‘who was the news report about?’ could be a frequent question.
Noel Carroll believed that a thriller should create questions and answers. It is important to create questions which make the audience guess and this then creates suspense and dramatic tension until the questions are answered. This in twines with the probability factor, such as will the hero survive?
Most thrillers use a particular type of social group, when we got feedback from our surveys, gangs and heroes were the most popular with 30% and 25% therefore we mixed the two to create something that the majority of thriller watchers could really enjoy. Another thing we used which is quite stereotypical of a thriller is we do have a woman as a victim in some respects, scarlet heart whose married to the gang leader mike steal is slightly the ‘damsel in distress’ she’s in a unhappy relationship but is saved by Simon Spencer who in the end fakes her death, therefore she would loose her family, friends and job.
Once a film is complete it gets sent of to media institutions. Our thriller is set in England, with English actors so naturally it should be sent to English companies such as UK screen, UK film council or even film four, if I was to choose one of the above I would go for film four because, the audience is mainly age 15 and above, most people around that age are familiar with the channel which is popular with older teenagers. Moreover with our survey results suggesting that most people don’t really go the cinema that often it’s a good way to get our target audience to see the film, as film four have a channel on sky.
Our thriller film is targeted for 15 to 19, however it can also be enjoyed by other ages, its just when we did our survey it had a young person’s perspective. Out of the 92.5% of people who enjoyed films, 80% of them enjoyed thrillers, therefore we made a thriller. We used there most favourite types of characters, gangs and heroes. Are setting played a small part, as we filmed inside it was hard to show the urban lifestyle of outside, with the house being quite posh it took the exotic into the ordinary. We used eeriee music to go with our thriller as 87.5% of the people said it works well to create tension, which in a thriller is what a lot of people expect. Our survey asked what people expect to see in a thriller. We asked what the plot of the last film they watched was, some general characteristics of these plotlines are: Murders, victims, crime type investigations, Modern films with modern settings, Twists and turns - these were written by many people, showing this tends to be the thing people remember. With this in mind we made our thriller as likeable as possible by using victims, death, crime, investigating and twists. To attract our audience we shown a group of people in class, we would also make posters and flyers and place them in places where 15 – 19 year olds would visit like schools, colleges and gyms.
After filming and editing our own thriller, I learnt that technology as helpful as it can be can also not be completely reliable, we had various problems when it came to our news report, it would sometimes just miss parts out, which ending in us cutting our news report down something we later got faulted on. Another problem we had with technology was when files just disappeared from the computer; it would make editing very confusing. However technology also really helped the green screen worked perfectly to create a news room, and when we made our titles appear one letter at a time this created suspense and really fitted well with our film. I have learnt to be patient with technology and to not be completely reliable; you should always save it on disk as well as the computer. I learnt how to use differnt programmes such as flash to create the credits which were very popular when screening the film. We used alot of adobe premier which helped advance my knowledge in the program, i learnt had to create flash back effects by diiping to white and faiding the sound. We also edited the news report with rounded corners to make it look like it was being watched on tv, this is another new techniques i have learnt.
After filming the preliminary task, I learnt about techniques such as match on action and the 180 degree rule, we used both of these in our end product. The match on action was hard to do, mainly because we worked with animals; it was hard to tell them to stay and when to move. There was a good shot of match on action when our lead charecter simon spencer is sat in his car the camera is placed behing the stearing wheel, then we go to a shot of him getting out the car, this is filmed further down the drive to the house. I have certainley progressed from the preliminary task, just with having more attempts and I was a lot more use to filming by the time we shot our film.
When we shown the film in class, we had some feedback which was, the news report was cut short, this confused my group as when we exported it, the news report was around 30 seconds but when we shown the film, it only lasted 10 seconds so by loosing the 20 seconds this made the film confusing. Another fault was that the news reader should have been older, this would of made the report looked that extra bit more realistic.
In conclusion the majority of our feed back was positive, everyone liked the story line and use of editing. I was very pleased with the final outcome, and happy with all the comments made on the film.
